Laser Cutting Cost FAQ

Why does nitrogen cutting cost more than oxygen cutting?

High-purity nitrogen flows at high volume and costs several times more per hour than oxygen. Oxygen-assisted cutting of mild steel uses less gas and leaves a different edge.

Should I include setup time in the quote?

Yes, but spread it across the batch. A one-off part carries the full programming cost; a run of 100 parts carries a small fraction each.

Why is my quote different from the calculator?

The calculator uses typical speeds. Real shops add piercing, nesting, material handling, post-processing and margin. Treat the result as a floor cost.

What laser power do I need for 10 mm stainless?

About 6 kW for production edges. See the thickness chart for the full range.

Is the calculator free to use commercially?

Yes — use the estimates in your own quoting, understanding they are approximations.

Where can I read about laser safety?

See OSHA's laser hazards page and the Laser Institute of America for safety standards and training resources.
